Jake Martin serves as the Chief Marketing & Communications Officer for Texas College. As a visionary and energetic leader, he understands the ever-evolving and nuanced landscape of higher education and confronts these challenges head-on with an emphasis on innovation, strategic transformation, and accountability.
Jake Martin currently serves as the Chief Marketing & Communications Officer for Texas College. Born to Michael Gary and Suzanna Kay Martin, he is a native of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; however, he considers Texas home, where he graduated from Chapel Hill High School. Following graduation, he immediately enrolled at Texas College in Tyler, Texas, where he had earned a football scholarship to pursue his education. During his tenure at Texas College, Martin would letter all four years in football, and eventually emerged as the team captain for the Steers' his junior and senior years of study. In addition to his leadership on the field, Martin was also elected Student Government Association (SGA) President, serving as the HBCUs first Caucasian SGA President.
Martin's undergraduate career culminated in May 2013 with the completion of his baccalaureate degree in Interdisciplinary Studies at Texas College. In addition to his undergraduate education, he pursued and completed the Master of Education degree in Student Development and Leadership in Higher Education at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. Further, he is currently in pursuit Doctor of Philosophy degree in Educational Administration and Higher Education Leadership at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana. He has successfully completed the degree's coursework and has progressed to the status of a PhD Candidate. He is currently working on his dissertation, in which his research examines the disconcerting student achievement gaps of minortized and underserved students, as well as investigates the successful matriculation of these populations at HBCUs and their institutional uniquities that foster student success. Martin anticipates to successfully complete his research and earn the Doctor of Philosophy degree by 2023.
Martin began his professional career immediately following his graduation from Texas College; however, he did not stray far. Instead, Martin began his career in higher education at Texas College (his alma mater), serving as an Admission Counselor and Recruiter, as well as an Assistant Football Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for the team. He departed from Texas College to teach and coach at Henderson High School in Henderson, Texas, alongside his former high school Head Football Coach and Offensive Coordinator. Martin eventually retired from the ranks of coaching and returned to Texas College. During this period, he served in a multitude of capacities with steadily increasing responsibilities. Inclusive of these are service as the Director of Admission, Coordinator of Public Relations, as well as involvement in a litany of initiatives that surrounded community building and engagement, advancement, fundraising, and others to the benefit of Texas College.
Martin would be recruited from his alma mater to The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler. During his time at UT Health Science Center, he provided oversight to the marketing and recruitment efforts that amounted to the university's largest enrollment to date for two consecutive years. Moreover, he was instrumental in the preliminary and initial efforts to launch UT Tyler's new medical school, which received overwhelming community support and the approval of The University of Texas System Board of Regents, as well as garnered an $80 million gift, which represented the largest single contribution ever made to establish a medical school in Texas. While at UT Health Science Center, Martin also served as the communication officer amid the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, coordinating with local public health districts to communicate the scenario effectively, as well as to provide mitigation guidance to ensure the safety of the community.
Martin began his latest tenure at Texas College on Monday, May 18, 2020. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Martin returned to Texas College to serve as the Chief Marketing & Communications Officer. Immediately, efforts were focused toward student recruitment and enrollment efforts, emphasizing the necessity to strategically transition traditional enrollment processes, as well as other College operations, into a viable and manageable virtual format. Under Martin's leadership, the College was able to successfully adapt to pandemic's fluid landscape with a stabilized enrollment and a complete shift toward virtual learning and engaging stakeholder events for over a full academic year, much of which continues as a supplement to in-person activities.
Aside from his professional service, Martin is also an engaged member of the Texas College National Alumni Association (TCNAA) at both the national and local level. Prior to being appointed Chief Marketing & Communications Officer, he served as the TCNAA - National Vice President for Fundraising and the TCNAA - Tyler Vice President for Budget. In addition, he also remains active in the East Texas community through his involvement with a variety of organizations.
Martin is married to Shelby-Nicole Martin and has three children, Owen, Matilda, and Brooks Jacob.
